Educational professionals are witnessing a rise in numbers of children and teenagers who simply can not digest or focus on mainstream education. This could be down to a learning difficulty or a child’s behavioural concern. Some parents have felt ill-equipped to support their children who find the traditional way of learning in a curriculum based setting in schools a challenge.

Every child matters but not everyone learns in the same way. How can we complement or offer alternative education that harvests and monopolises on the skills set that each individual childs has? How can we promote confidence in learning?

Has the time come to teach our children about life and survival skills alongside their studies? Could this be the perfect opportunity for parents to offer their children a complement to their mainstream education by investing in their inner businessperson? Could more households now have the entrepreneurial fuelled opportunity to give birth to and develop the future Lord Alan Sugar’s and Karen Brady’s of the next generation?

Could there now be a need for children to become self-sufficient by learning the art of turning lemons into lemonade by using their personal talent to generate income in any future economy?

The Bejewelled Academy’s latest PSHE offering, the Y-Preneur Course, could be a revolutionary step for today’s children to make the most of an unprecedented time. After all, the Course Director, Melissa Doussey knows all too well how to excel in times of adversity and has survived to tell her story and share her lemonade…

Melissa Doussey is the bright and creative director of the Bejewelled Academy, a successful business providing unique and innovative workshops that uses creativity to help build the confidence in after school clubs and dynamic courses across the UK.

Mum of three, Melissa understands how external and unexpected events can negatively stagnate a child’s personal growth and mental development. At age 3, Hackney born Melissa, together with her sisters, were rescued from her father’s attempt to kidnap them before he committed suicide on Hackney’s Pembury Estate in a petrol bomb fire. The chilling and tragic events made local news and was later documented in a gripping five-part series on Sky’s My Channel.

Melissa grew up in Hackney’s infamous Clapton Park Estate where she was becoming affiliated to gang-life was allowing her peers, inner pain and surroundings to create her false identity. Thankfully, an invitation to the UCKG HelpCentre and its vibrant youth group helped Melissa to redirect her emotions into her passions and talents. This troubled teen soon blossomed into a young lady driven to make a positive contribution to her community. Melissa has since featured twice in the Hackney Gazette for her donating her bespoke jewellery sales towards the building of a much needed youth regeneration centre in Peckham. Her motivational full-length life story was later featured again in the same publication years later.

Melissa Doussey is a creative entrepreneur who started after taking a jewellery making workshop whilst working in finance for Goldmann Sachs. Melissa quickly started making bespoke, colourful and striking pieces that were later hosted by ASOS and a number of private clienteles. Her ten-year journey to financial freedom through entrepreneurialism is carefully detailed in her book, ‘Starting From the Bottom Up’, which is currently available on Amazon.

As her business grew, Melissa decided to leave her high-profile role at a prominent financial institution to build her entrepreneurial empire full-time. Her passion and drive spurred her on to become a catalyst for creative learning for children of all ages …The Bejewelled Academy was born.

“I created, launched and ran my own entrepreneurial clubs and workshops for children and young people. The success of these led me to create an online entrepreneurial course that can easily be accessed in a classroom environment or at home for individual study or study with a parent. The course consists of challenges, tasks, quizzes, personal accounts and teaches students skills that are valuable outside of monetising a hobby or passion!” said Melissa.

The Youthpreneur course is a wonderful tool that provides children and young people form ages 6 – 15 years old with the online opportunity to unleash their inner entrepreneur and focus through challenge!

“The pandemic has taught us that our children need to be equipped with the choice of mainstream education as well as the investment into them realising and developing their individual talents to create a wealth driven product or service. Many adults have been forced into leaving their careers and creating independent wealth through their own business,” said Mumpreneur of three.

“Now more than ever, our children need to learn how to think creatively, be resourceful, show resilience and be confident in learning positive lessons and finding solutions when things don’t quite go to plan! An entrepreneurial mindset promotes all of these things.

I would love to provide readers with some tips on things that might help them to monetise a hobby, passion or idea. These tips however, would also be beneficial for other aspects of their lives:

“Go-Back Planning” - This is a strategy we share within our course. Starting from your goal and working backwards in small, simplified steps. I would also happily share with readers our template which helps our students to easily plan using this strategy.

Selling Confidence - Test your selling confidence by a random sell challenge that can be done at home with an adult family member, sibling or a small group of friends. This is a fun challenge that we also include in our course and I would be happy to share it with your readers.

Profit and Loss - Knowledge of this is so important in business. I would share the basic P&L formula with your readers and also set one or two fun business scenarios where they would need to work out the profit or loss made in each scenario. Answers could perhaps be found elsewhere in the magazine.

Students complete the online course in their own time and arw awarded with a certificate at the end.

For more information and how to enrol on the course, v contact Melissa Doussey on 07833 972 438 or by email learning@bejewelled-academy.com. Course cost £70.00

Israel's story

‘The picture on the left was taken by my mum on the 24th of April 2020. School was shut, I couldn’t play with my friends or go and see my family. I couldn’t go to church and there was no news about when I would be able to do those things again. My mum used to sit by the the window and read, so I joined her. I was sad and fed up. Little did I know that just 2 months later, I would start an amazing journey.

My mum bought the Youthpreneur at home study course that made me realise that having a business as a kid wasn’t only something I wanted to do, but it was also something I could do. Fast forward 3 months after that, I was on a 14 week course with @ultraeducation where I had the inspiration to write a book. What’s happened since then has been amazing. And now, I’m glad for the difficult time I was having because it led me to something great.

You can’t wait for perfect circumstances to start working on your dreams. Start now.’ - Israel Allen, Kidpreneur and founder of @animalfusionsstories

Parents approve!

Hi,

My 12 year old loved the course. He enjoyed creating his own product and learning the basics of business and understanding the value of money . The profit /loss part especially helped him see if he would like to continue developing the product.

Thank you - Dana

Happy Mama!

Thank you for making the course so accessible. My sons are 12, 10 and 7 (there’s a 2 year old little man too!) and they are home educated. Doing this course has made for a really well rounded lesson/ topic for them. We’ve created a company name, tag line, logo which has covered art, graphic design and English. Then the profit and loss was a great maths lesson for all of them. The well-being section was also really useful for opening up conversations about worries etc. So all in all, we have happy boys who feel they have achieved something. And a happy Mumma because it was such a great all round, thorough lesson! So thank you very much for that :)

All the best,

Sarah

WORKING WITH YOUR local authority

"This is a great course offering a younger age group an opportunity to learn financial and marketing skills not offered in schools. This course starts the conversation with kids about careers whilst focusing on numeracy, literacy and communication skills. Kids gain confidence to speak and articulate their ideas and learn to work collaboratively. It's made fun and engaging and always popular."
